Prof. Uzi Arad, Former National Security Advisor to the PM of Israel and Former Head of the Israeli National Security Council, spoke to JPC members on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, about the recent round of talks between Israeli PM Netanyahu and PA President Abbas, his opinion on the source of the conflict and possible resolutions. Prof. Arad noted that “the Palestinian state has been recognized as the state of the Palestinians. The resolution of the cause of the problem lies in the recognition of Israel as the Jewish state.” When referring to the negotiations, Prof. Arad said: “If we can’t accomplish everything, the answer should not be to accomplish nothing.”
About Prof. Uzi Arad:
Professor Uzi Arad is Professor of government at IDC’s Lauder School of Government, Diplomacy and Strategy, and Chair of the Grand Strategy Forum and the Center for Defense Studies. Arad served as National Security Advisor to Israel’s PM Netanyahu and Head of the Israeli NSC from 2009 to 2011. During Netanyahu’s first term as Prime Minister, Arad was his Foreign Policy Advisor. Between 1975 and 1999 Prof. Arad served with Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, where he held senior positions in Israel and abroad, his last position being Director of the Intelligence Division. At IDC Arad founded the Institute for Policy and Strategy and launched and presided over its annual Herzliya Conference Series.
Prior to his career in government, Arad was a Professional Staff Member at Hudson Institute in New York and a Fellow at Tel Aviv University’s Center for Strategic Studies. He is co-author of The National Security Council: the Struggle to Organize Decision Making at the Top (forthcoming, 2014), Sharing Global Resources, and editor of The Balance of Israel’s National Security and Resilience. Prof. Arad received his M.A. (1973) and Ph.D. (1975) in International Relations from Princeton University, which he attended as a Fulbright Scholar. In 2013 he was awarded the rank of Officer of the French Legion of Honor.
