WHERE JOURNALISTS MEET ISRAEL

In the Aftermath of the Paris Conference with Ambassador Gideon Meir

In the Aftermath of the Paris Conference with Ambassador Gideon Meir

Ambassador Gideon Meir, former Director General for Public Policy at the Israeli Foreign Ministry, spoke to members of JPC on the Ramifications of the Paris conference. Amb. Meir said that the timing of the conference – just days before the inauguration of Pres. Trump, with President Holland not running again – was poor, and in general, the conference had only declaratory value, if at all. At the same time, he was critical of the Israeli government’s habit of responding to the conference – as well as to the UN Security Coulncil resolution re the settlements – as counterproductive, because rhetoric aside, there was no real building in the settlements. Amb. Meir concluded that if the international community really wanted to promote peace, it should have forced both sides to come to the negotiations table, offer umbrella and incentives and not settle with worthless declarations.
