On Wednesday, July 24, 2013 The Jerusalem Press Club hosted the ONA- Online News Association Jerusalem Launch. ONA was welcomed to Jerusalem with a lovely evening bringing together those interested in digital journalism, technology, and online storytelling. The event started off with an introduction about the Online News Organization’s work as a nonprofit connecting journalism, technology, and innovation. Twitter is a widely used platform for instantly sharing news anywhere in the world and has in the last 2 years exploded in popularity in the news industry.

ONA Jerusalem is the first local Online News Association group in the Middle East and is working to bring together a range of local professionals interested in a local community, training resources and professional opportunities. ONA’s lineup included speakers who are members of local media online and offline, digital photojournalism, and “Journalism 2.0”.

The first speaker we heard from was The Times of Israel’s social media editor Sarah Tuttle-Singer speaking on Journalism 2.0: How social media and blogging is changing the world of journalism. The world of journalism is changing with the advent and popularity of social networking sites such as facebook and twitter, they have completely changed the way we interact with the news and information.

Mati Milstein spoke about digital photojournalism in Palestine and Israel. Mati showed us photos he has taken in both areas, and told the stories behind them. Mati’s work has been featured in publications worldwide such as Le Monde, Haaretz, Al-Quds, Monocle, National Geographic News, and more! He spoke with the audience about challenges photojournalists have and how that has changed over the years. Thanks to new media, the relationship between the subject and the photographer has changed completely. Now we are all connected anywhere on the planet.

Geektime is Israel’s largest technology news blog. Yaniv spoke on the hottest trends in innovation and how to keep track of it all. With Geektime covering areas from Internet and Mobile, to Cleantech and Biomend you can imagine there is a lot to get through and keep organized.

Tovah Lazaroff, the Deputy Managing Editor of The Jerusalem Post, spoke about the one second news cycle. She elaborated by saying that traditional media such as newspapers are on a 24 hour news cycle. This means that they have a full 24 hours in between issues and are able to spend the time properly working on articles, and do not have to pull the trigger to publish immediately. This is very different from the web-based organisations such as twitter etc. which are on a one to two second news cycle. She also mentioned that journalism is moving from a monologue, to a participatory dialogue with talkbacks.
