On June 22 – 2015, General Uzi Dayan, IDF (Ret.) spoke at the Jerusalem Press Club about the rising threats against the Druze in Syria and Israel’s options and dilemmas concerning this issue. Gen. Dayan, former Deputy Chief of Staff of the IDF and Head of the National Security Council, now heads the Security Council of Israel, a group, he says, “having more nationalistic orientation than other such groups”. In his talk, Gen. Dayan explained that he wants to raise public awareness to the plight of the Druze in Syria, and to demand that Israel reaffirms its commitment to the Israeli Druze, not to let their Syrian brothers to be harmed.
Maj. Gen. (res.) Uzi Dayan was born in 1948 and grew up on Moshav Hayogev in Israel.
In 1966 he was inducted into the IDF and over the years served in a number of positions. Amongst them: Head of the Planning Branch of the I.D.F., Central Command Commander and then Deputy Chief of General Staff.
From 2000-2002, Dayan was Chairman of Israel’s National Security Council and National Security Adviser to Prime minister Barak and Sharon.
Dayan is the founder and President of Israel-Sderot Conference on Social Issues and he is also Chairman of Hugey Sayarut, a youth Zionist organization.
In 2011 was nominated to be Chairman of the Israel National Lottery. Dayan sees the Israel National Lottery as an organization whose main aim is to recruit money to empower the Israeli society in emphasis on education and culture.
Dayan holds a B.Sc. degree in mathematics and physics from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and a M.Sc. degree in operations research from Stanford University in California.
Uzi is married to Prof. Tamar Dayan, a faculty member at Tel-Aviv University’s Department of Zoology. They have three children.
